Using race to represent people
How and why did society portray black people in disrespectful and insulting ways during and after slavery?
- Add this question to My scrapbook
The inequality that developed during the
transatlantic slave trade continued in the 19th century. African
people were portrayed in very negative and insulting ways. The
language that was used to describe people was also very offensive.
Because slavery was legal and enslaved people were seen as property
and not human beings, the society in power believed it was right to
present black people in these ways. Images such as this ‘golly’
were used in advertising, books and films which meant that the ways
people were seen and thought about were not truthful. Many of the
stereotyping that began during the slave trade still exists in some
ways in society today.
