Remembering a difficult past
Why should Briton's talk about the difficult and unpleasant parts of British history?
- Add this question to My scrapbook
For many years people did not want to talk about or
remember the transatlantic slave trade. People did not want to
think too much about the difficult and uncomfortable facts because
they felt guilt, shame or anger. Some thought it was disrespectful
to remember, others felt that people of African descent were only
mentioned when the subject was racism or stereotyping. But as there
are many examples of Britain’s slaving heritage in museums and
buildings it is important to discuss this important part of British
history.
