To assist with the competition and offer ongoing teaching support,
two invaluable classroom resources were developed: The Citizen
Resource, developed for teachers: and a corresponding Citizen
Website for students. Teachers and students were encouraged to use
these resources to inform their entries, along with reference to
museum collections and other relevant research material.
Citizen Resource
The Citizen Resource was designed to support the effective teaching
of the history and legacies of the slavery at KS3 and KS4 through
the use of artefacts and archival material. It was produced in
conjunction with the
Citizen Website and
follows the same themes: Activism, Heritage, Identity and Routes.

Citizen Website
www.understandingslavery.com
The Citizen Website is for KS3 students, and compliments the
Understanding Slavery Initiative (USI) Citizen Resource. It is
organised under four themes: Activism, Heritage, Identity and
Routes and is designed as a visually rich collection for students
to research these with corresponding artefacts, biographies and
archival material – including audio and film clips. Through an
interactive timeline, students are introduced to specific
historical events which are illustrated through the collection on
the website. Tools also include an interactive scrapbook and
glossary.
